Safe Flights And Transport to Tanzania

Intercontinental Flights

There are direct and one-stop flights from overseas to Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro (near Arusha) and Zanzibar Island. Arusha town is the starting point for Tanzania’s most popular Northern Safari Circuit. Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) is situated 46km/29mi east of Arusha. Tanzania’s main airport is Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) located 13km/8mi southwest of Dar es Salaam. The latter is the entry-point for visitors to the southern parks.

Moving on from Arusha or Dar es Salaam you can fly or drive between reserves or you can opt to do a bit of both. Some domestic flights out of Arusha will leave from Kilimanjaro International Airport, but most flights to reserves leave from the much smaller Arusha Airport (ARK) located 8km/5mi west of town. However you choose to travel, we will pick you up from the airport and arrange all further transportation as part of your safari package.

Domestic Flights

While you are booking the intercontinental flight yourself, we are happy to take over the bookings for your domestic flights. There are flight connections between the following airports: Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam, Mafia, Pemba, Pangani, Mwanza and the individual national parks.

We recommend followin companies:

Auric Air

Precision Air

Regional Air

ZanAir

Safari Air Link

Coastal Aviation

Public buses

Regular buses run between most cities. The busiest route leads from Arusha to Dar es Salaam and vice versa. Luxury buses are also in operation here. These buses are more comfortable than the usual local buses - reclining seats, enough legroom, TV and air conditioning - and comparable to European vehicles. The companies use buses from the Brazilian bus manufacturer Marcopolo.

As a reliable company, we recommend Dar Express.

Ship connections

Ferries connect Dar es Salaam with Zanzibar and Mtwara, as well as Zanzibar with Pemba. Ferry boats also operate on the East African Lakes (Victoria, Tanganika and Malawi). We would be happy to book your ferry tickets for you.

As a reliable company, we recommend Azam Marine.

Rail connections

There is irregular rail traffic between Dar es Salaam and Kigoma, via Dodoma and Tabora. A second route connects Tabora and Mwanza. The third line can be booked from Dar es Salaam via Mbiya to Kapiri Mposhi (Zambia). We would be happy to book your train tickets for you.

We only recommend rail travel if you are not pressed for time.

Rental car

Renting a four-wheel drive vehicle in Tanzania is not recommended due to the enormous accident rates and poor road conditions.

Taxi

If you call yourself a taxi, you should negotiate the fare with the taxi driver before you get in. One looks in vain for a taximeter in the vehicles.

Daladala (local public transport)

In contrast to the European city buses, only minibuses (Daladala) operate within the cities and between the localities as local public transport. These are usually completely overloaded, as they serve as a means of transport for all Tanzanians. It's the cheapest way to get from A to B. We only recommend such a trip if you want to experience local color, if you leave valuables, money and cell phones in the hotel, because the saying can come true here: "Opportunity makes thieves".
